Lost Treasure of London

On a recent walk about in London, I came across a hidden treasure of our city. Southwark Cathedral.

Quote from wikipedia –

“Southwark Cathedral or The Cathedral and Collegiate Church of St Saviour and St Mary Overie, Southwark, London, lies on the south bank of the River Thames close to London Bridge.

It is the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Southwark. It has been a place of Christian worship for over 1,000 years, but a cathedral only since 1905. The present building is mainly Gothic, from 1220 to 1420.”

The architecture is stunning. Well worth a stop to admire it.

It’s all over for Film Photography…

Well it seems the art of film processing has passed away. I recently spotted this film processing shop all boarded up and the building about to be demolished. No way back now, the digital format has taken complete control. There has never been a problem with printing colour digitally only the mono side has proved problems – but those days are gone. You take a look at a mono darkroom produced print and a quality digital print and there is no comparison – digital wins hands down…

If you are still using film – well you better stock up ‘cos film stocks in the warehouses are running low and I think you will soon see that film photography will be a thing of the past… That includes the medium and large format image makers… No matter what the die-hards say.
The camera and printer quality has never been better and no doubt they will continue to improve.
So goodbye Film – hello – and a warm welcome – to the Digital age…
Its a shame but maybe thats progress…
No more chemicals to worry about… An industry dead.

Walking around Paris

I recently visited Paris. A wonderful city, in full autumnal bloom. Dynamic buildings in the new La Defense region and the old established ones, in the main part of the city, which gives Paris its unique style.

The cafe culture born in Paris is often copied but never bettered by other cities. The madness of the driving – you have to be bold and cross the road at your peril.

Only the Parisians with their Art Culture would think – even consider – putting a modern glass pyramid next to the established old building of the Louvre!

Palaces, churches, art, museums and monuments Paris has got it all..

Whats more I didn’t get to see half of it… Ill have to go back!

Lost in Paris

Mobile phone photography…

Whilst killing time in La Defense Paris a few weeks back i made the cardinal sin – I left my camera in the hotel.. With all the architectural opportunities to photograph available I felt like screaming – I just hadn’t enough time to go back get my camera then return to work! Any means of something to record what i was seeing was needed – the mobile phone came to the rescue…. A Blackberry Bold. Now I know the lens on the phone is not that great – in comparison to other mobile phones not to mention compact camera’s and DSLR’s – but if you need something then my Blackberry was better than nothing…

La Defense is an area of architectural saturation and can only be matched by similar areas in our modern cities in europe such as Barcelona, Madrid, and our City’s – London – Canary Warf… These areas, that have developed over the last few decades, have allowed designers a freedom to express strength, power, solidity and beauty.

Thanks to the Bold I could get some record of this fascinating vibrant area. One which I will return to next time with a better camera and lens.
